Year 10

HPE

In Year 10, students have the option to choose between studying HPE or History for the full year. If students choose HPE, they will study a variety of units that link to our senior subject offerings of Health, Physical Education and Sport and Recreation while still meeting Year 10 HPE curriculum expectations. Throughout these units, students will develop a more refined understanding of how they can contribute to individual and community health and wellbeing. They will be given opportunities to participate in physical activities in outdoor settings to value the importance of outdoor recreation as a way of enhancing their health and wellbeing throughout their lives. Practical learning experiences in these years support students to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate personal habits to enhance their wellbeing. Students further investigate techniques to assess the quality of movement performances and learn to be creative in the ways that they adapt and improvise their movements to respond to different movement situations, stimuli and challenges.

  • Unit 1: Better Your Game - Performance analysis and evaluation of a physical activity
  • Unit 2: Moranbah physical activity challenge (community health) with a variety of recreational activities
  • Unit 3: Fitness, energy systems and training programs with a physical activity
  • Unit 4: Introduction to anatomy and biomechanics with cricket

Year 11 & 12

HEALTH (QCAA Health)

Health provides students with a contextualised strengths-based inquiry of the various determinants that create and promote lifelong health, learning and active citizenship. Drawing from the health, behavioural, social and physical sciences, the Health syllabus offers students an action, advocacy and evaluation- oriented curriculum.

Health uses an inquiry approach informed by the critical analysis of health information to investigate sustainable health change at personal, peer, family and community levels.

Students define and understand broad health topics, which they reframe into specific contextualised health issues for further investigation.

Students plan, implement, evaluate and reflect on action strategies that mediate, enable and advocate change through health promotion.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (QCAA Physical Education)

Physical Education provides students with knowledge, understanding and skills to explore and enhance their own and others' health and physical activity in diverse and changing contexts.

Physical Education provides a philosophical and educative framework to promote deep learning in three dimensions: about, through and in physical activity contexts. Students optimise their engagement and performance in physical activity as they develop an understanding and appreciation of the interconnectedness of these dimensions.

Students learn how body and movement concepts and the scientific bases of biophysical, sociocultural and psychological concepts and principles are relevant to their engagement and performance in physical activity. They engage in a range of activities to develop movement sequences and movement strategies.

Students learn experientially through three stages of an inquiry approach to make connections between the scientific bases and the physical activity contexts. They recognise and explain concepts and principles about and through movement, and demonstrate and apply body and movement concepts to movement sequences and movement strategies.

Through their purposeful engagement in physical activities, students gather data to analyse, synthesise and devise strategies to optimise engagement and performance. They engage in reflective decision-making as they evaluate and justify strategies to achieve a particular outcome.

SPORT AND RECREATION (QCAA Sport and Recreation)

Sport and Recreation

Recreation provides students with opportunities to learn in, through and about sport and active recreation activities, examining their role in the lives of individuals and communities.

Students examine the relevance of sport and active recreation in Australian culture, employment growth, health and wellbeing. They consider factors that influence participation in sport and recreation, and how physical skills can enhance participation and performance in sport and recreation activities. Students explore how interpersonal skills support effective interaction with others, and the promotion of safety in sport and recreation activities. They examine technology in sport and recreation activities, and how the sport and recreation industry contributes to individual and community outcomes.

Students are involved in acquiring, applying and evaluating information about and in physical activities and performances, planning and organising activities, investigating solutions to individual and community challenges, and using suitable technologies where relevant. They communicate ideas and information in, about and through sport and recreation activities. They examine the effects of sport and recreation on individuals and communities, investigate the role of sport and recreation in maintaining good health, evaluate strategies to promote health and safety, and investigate personal and interpersonal skills to achieve goals.
